Note from the Writer
The Ballad of Madelyne and Therese takes place in 1940 but asks the fundamental question: What makes you feel most alive? And: What are you willing to risk in order to be ALIVE while you are alive?
I started thinking about queer women who were alive in 1940. I knew very little about them because their stories aren’t told all that often. But I wondered: what must it have been like to be queer in the 1940s? How might a woman have expressed this? Where are the stories that focus on the experience of navigating queerness - the actual humanness of it, not just the obstacles?
Many of us have been conditioned to see female desire as dangerous and disruptive instead of gorgeous and uplifting. Why is this? I wanted to make something that aspires to disrupt that conditioning. I wanted to explore characters who don’t just fall in love but who fall into aliveness. And then lose touch with their aliveness. And then long to have it back. At its core, The Ballad is a story about longing. While it presents as a love story, the actual longing is for something deeper than love or connection; the longing is to feel alive.

2023 - The Origins
It all started in 2023, when Rachel recorded a concept album with producer Jonny Flaugher. Having grown up a tomboy, Rachel had long harbored an interest in the aesthetics, communities, and lives of the lesbians who came before her. This interest grew into a song, then several songs, until Rachel had a thirteen-track LP loosely inspired by her queer ancestors.
The Ballad of Madelyne & Therese (the concept album, that is) was released July 21, 2023. Today, it’s amassed over 200k streams on Spotify.

2024 - Early Concerts
By the time of the album’s release, Rachel had started to sense that it was more than just a collection of songs. The plot wasn’t there yet, but there were characters, there were themes.
After playing a series of narrated concerts to early audiences, Rachel began to flesh out the story of Madelyne & Therese. Here, The Ballad found its footing as a piece of theater, and Rachel was joined by a full band as she presented this new version to audiences.

2025 - Act I Workshops
Over the past year, Rachel has continued to develop the work for a theatrical context, writing new songs and gaining a deeper understanding of the characters. Now, the piece has become a 2-act play told through 23 songs.
In May, Rachel had the opportunity to present Act I at two New York City venues. Joined by her band, she performed workshop showings of the expanded first act to sold-out audiences, allowing her to see how this newly fleshed-out material was landing.

2025 - Workshop Performances
After workshopping Act I in New York, Rachel turned to developing the second half of the piece. Over the summer, she worked closely with Charlie Varon and Madeleine Oldham to complete a full draft of The Ballad.
In November, she presented this new iteration to sold-out audiences at Potrero Stage in San Francisco.
